Chlamydomonas alga

Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph of a section through the unicellular green algae, Chlamydomonas asymmetrica. The micrograph shows the arrangement of chloroplasts (green) around the circumference of the cell. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in higher plants & green algae. They contain light-sensitive chlorophyll pigments, which react to produce sugar from carbon dioxide. Sugar can be stored in the chloroplast as starch (yellow). Algal chloroplasts often contain a body called a pyrenoid, seen as the blue mass at the centre of the large area of starch. Magnific- ation: x3100 at 35mm size, x6000 at 6x6cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 1.8, page 10

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of Chlamydomonas asymmetrica, a unicellular green algae. Through the lens of a transmission electron microscope, we are granted an up-close view of this remarkable organism's cellular structure. The vibrant green hue that envelops the cell represents chloroplasts, which play a vital role in photosynthesis for higher plants and green algae. Within these chloroplasts lie light-sensitive chlorophyll pigments that react to convert carbon dioxide into sugar, sustaining life within the alga. Interestingly, this micrograph also reveals starch storage within the chloroplasts, depicted as a striking yellow coloration. At its center lies a pyrenoid - an intriguing body seen as a mass of blue amidst the sea of starch. The level of magnification applied to capture this image is truly awe-inspiring; at 35mm size it reaches x3100 magnification and at 6x6cm size it achieves an even more impressive x6000 magnification. This photograph serves as both art and science, showcasing nature's complexity on a microscopic scale. Displayed by Science Photo Library with reference to their publication "MICROCOSMOS" figure 1.8 on page 10, this print invites viewers to marvel at the wonders hidden beneath our naked eye while appreciating the delicate balance between organisms and their environment.
