At left are furnaces and stoves, along with distillation equipment and a fume hood. In the background is a sink. On the shelves are bottles and other glassware, including distillation retorts (near ceiling). There are also crucibles, tongs, ladles, pestles and mortars. This is an engraving by Ambrose William Warren (c.1781-1856), after the painting by British artist Cornelius Varley (1781-1873). Titled A Design for a General Laboratory, the engraving was published in 1822 in The Chemical Catechism
