Chemical explosion
Chemical explosion. Cork exploding out of a bottle of sparkling wine. There is no wine. The cork has exploded out due to an increase in pressure due to the production of gas in a chemical reaction. The reaction is between aluminium chloride and sodium carbonate, producing carbon dioxide gas. The same gas is produced when shaking a bottle of champagne or any other carbonated (fizzy) drink, though then the gas is bubbling out of solution. Gases take up far more room than liquids or solids. It is this rapid expansion of gases that causes the massive destruction in chemical explosions from materials such as dynamite or TNT

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing moment of a chemical explosion. In this particular image, we witness an intense burst of energy as a cork explosively propels out of an empty bottle of sparkling wine. However, there is no celebratory drink involved here; instead, the forceful expulsion results from a remarkable increase in pressure caused by a chemical reaction. The reaction at play involves aluminium chloride and sodium carbonate, which combine to produce carbon dioxide gas. This same gas is responsible for the effervescence experienced when shaking a bottle of champagne or any other fizzy beverage. Yet, unlike those delightful bubbles that gradually escape from solution, here we witness gases expanding rapidly and forcefully. Gases possess an extraordinary ability to occupy significantly more space than liquids or solids do. It is precisely this rapid expansion that underlies the immense destruction seen in chemical explosions involving materials like dynamite or TNT. This photograph serves as both a demonstration and an experiment within the realm of chemistry. It showcases how different substances can react violently with one another when conditions are just right. The equipment used in this laboratory setting highlights the controlled environment necessary for such reactions to take place safely. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment where science meets spectacle – reminding us all of the incredible power contained within even seemingly innocuous objects like bottles and corks.
