Charles Richet, French physiologist

Charles Robert Richet (1850-1935), French physiologist. Richet studied medicine in Paris and was appointed professor of physiology at the University of Paris, Sorbonne, in 1887. He initially explored various avenues of research, and in 1890, gave the first human injection of anti-tuberculosis serum. The growing use of antisera for the treatment of infectious diseases highlighted the problem of allergic reaction to injections. Richet studied this hypersensitivity in dogs. He concluded that repeated injections of foreign proteins over time eventually resulted in a fatal reaction, which he termed anaphylaxis. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed physiologist, Charles Robert Richet. Born in 1850, Richet dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of medicine and physiology. After completing his medical studies in Paris, he was appointed as a professor of physiology at the University of Paris, Sorbonne. Richet's groundbreaking research led him to become a pioneer in the field of immunology. In 1890, he made history by administering the first human injection of anti-tuberculosis serum. This marked an important milestone in the treatment of infectious diseases. However, it was Richet's study on allergic reactions that truly set him apart. Through experiments conducted on dogs, he discovered that repeated injections of foreign proteins could lead to a fatal reaction known as anaphylaxis. This groundbreaking finding shed light on the dangers associated with certain medical procedures and paved the way for further advancements in allergy research. In recognition of his remarkable contributions to medicine and physiology, Charles Robert Richet was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1913. His work continues to inspire generations of scientists and remains instrumental in our understanding of allergies and immunology. This historical photograph serves as a powerful reminder not only of Richet's significant achievements but also highlights how scientific breakthroughs can shape our understanding and improve healthcare practices throughout time.
