Cerenkov light detectors for gamma ray astronomy

Gamma ray astronomy. Cerenkov telescope at the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) site at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Cerenkov radiation is the pulses of blue light given off by electrons creat- ed when a high-energy gamma ray from space strikes the atmosphere. These gamma rays have up to 10 thousand billion electron volts of energy. This instrument is one of the worlds most sensitive Cerenkov detectors, using an array of small mirrors to focus the incoming light flashes onto a detector at upper left. HEGRA has many in- struments, of several types, spread out over hund- reds of square metres. Photographed in early 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Cerenkov light detectors used in gamma ray astronomy. The image captures a Cerenkov telescope at the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) site, located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands. Cerenkov radiation, depicted here as mesmerizing pulses of blue light, occurs when high-energy gamma rays from space collide with Earth's atmosphere and create electrons. These remarkable gamma rays possess an astonishing energy level of up to 10 thousand billion electron volts. Considered one of the world's most sensitive Cerenkov detectors, this instrument employs an array of small mirrors that skillfully concentrate incoming light flashes onto a detector positioned at the upper left corner. HEGRA encompasses numerous instruments spread across hundreds of square meters, each serving different purposes and employing various technologies. Captured in early 1997 by Science Photo Library, this photograph not only highlights the awe-inspiring beauty within scientific exploration but also emphasizes humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel mysteries beyond our planet. It symbolizes our tireless efforts to comprehend and harness these extraordinary phenomena for astrophysical research.
