Centaurus and Crux constellations

Centaurus and Crux constellations. These are bright constellations in the southern hemisphere, representing a centaur and the Southern Cross respectively. The brightest star in Centaurus is Alpha Centauri (left one of the two bright stars at lower left). To the naked eye this is the third brightest star in the night sky, but it is in fact a close binary star, whose brightest member alone is only the fourth brightest star in the sky. Just right of lower centre is Crux, formed of four bright stars in the shape of a cross. Just below and left of Crux, there is a dark patch silhouetted against the bright Milky Way. This is a foreground dust cloud called the Coal Sack

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Centaurus and Crux constellations in all their celestial glory. Located in the southern hemisphere, these bright constellations hold significant cultural and astronomical significance. The Centaurus constellation, represented by a centaur, boasts Alpha Centauri as its brightest star. Positioned on the lower left side of this image, it is actually a close binary star system that ranks as the fourth brightest star when observed with naked eyes. Meanwhile, just slightly to the right of center lies Crux - also known as the Southern Cross - formed by four radiant stars arranged in a cross shape. As we gaze at this breathtaking scene, our eyes are drawn to an intriguing dark patch below and left of Crux. This enigmatic silhouette against the luminous Milky Way is none other than a foreground dust cloud called the Coal Sack nebula. Its presence adds depth and mystery to an already awe-inspiring composition. Within this single frame captured by Science Photo Library, we witness not only these prominent constellations but also glimpses of other celestial wonders like globular clusters and distant galaxies. It serves as a reminder of how vast and wondrous our universe truly is. Whether you're an astronomy enthusiast or simply appreciate nature's grandeur, this print invites you to explore and marvel at the splendor that awaits us beyond Earth's atmosphere.
