Cave of Crystals, Naica Mine, Mexico

^BCave of Crystals.^b Geologist in the Cave of Crystals (^ICueva de los Cristales^i) in Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico. The crystals are the largest known in the world, and are formed of the selenite form of gypsum (calcium sulphate). They formed over millions of years in the mineral-rich geothermally heated water that filled the caves. The crystals were discovered after the water was pumped out of the mine. The Cave of Crystals is 290 metres deep, and was discovered in 2000. Above it, 120 metres deep, is the Cave of Swords (^ICueva^i ^Ide^i ^Ilas Espadas^i), which was discovered in 1912. The crystals in this cave are smaller as its water cooled more rapidly

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of the Cave of Crystals, located in Naica Mine, Mexico. Geologists can be seen exploring this natural wonder, which houses the largest known crystals on Earth. These magnificent formations are composed of selenite gypsum and took millions of years to develop within the mineral-rich geothermal waters that once filled these underground chambers. Discovered in 2000 after water was pumped out from the mine, the Cave of Crystals reaches a staggering depth of 290 meters. Just above it lies another remarkable site called the Cave of Swords, discovered over a century ago in 1912 at a depth of 120 meters. While its crystals are smaller due to quicker cooling processes, they still possess an undeniable allure. This photograph not only captures the grandeur and scale of these geological marvels but also highlights their significance for scientific research and exploration. The image portrays a geologist immersed in this otherworldly environment, emphasizing humanity's ongoing quest for knowledge about our planet's hidden treasures. Javier Trueba masterfully captured this momentous scene through his lens as part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection. It serves as a testament to both nature's extraordinary creations and human curiosity that continues to unravel their mysteries.
