Castor oil plant. 17th century artwork of a castor oil plant (Ricinus sp.), which is used in herbal medicine as a purgative (to discharge pus). Also seen is a Grass of Parnasus (at left, Parnassia sp. labelled with its original name Gramen pernassi), which is used as an astringent and tonic. At right is a bell flower (Campanula sp.). This artwork is taken from Basilius Beslers Hortus Eystettensis (1613), which illustrated over 1000 flowers and attempted an early pre-Linnaeus taxonomy, making it the largest and most comprehensive work of its time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th-century artwork showcases the intricate details of a Castor oil plant, known for its medicinal properties in herbal medicine. The print also features a Grass of Parnasus and a bell flower, adding to the botanical richness depicted in this illustration. Taken from Basilius Beslers Hortus Eystettensis, a groundbreaking work published in 1613, this print is part of an extensive collection that aimed to categorize over 1000 flowers before Linnaeus' taxonomy system was established. The historical significance of this artwork lies not only in its ornamental beauty but also in its contribution to the field of horticulture and botany during that era. With meticulous precision, the German artist Basilius Besler captured the essence of these plants on copper plates, creating an enduring legacy. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, each plant portrayed holds specific medicinal value. The Castor oil plant was renowned for its purgative properties and ability to discharge pus when used as an herbal remedy. Meanwhile, the Grass of Parnasus served as both an astringent and tonic agent. As we admire this remarkable piece from Science Photo Library's archives today, we are transported back to a time when botanical illustrations were not only works of art but also valuable scientific resources. This print serves as a testament to humanity's longstanding fascination with nature's wonders and our continuous quest for knowledge about plants' healing potential.
