Carnivorous plant leaf scales, SEM

Carnivorous plant leaf scales. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of leaf scales from the yellow pitcher plant (Sarracenia flava). These are found on the inside surface of the leaves used by this carnivorous plant to trap insects. The scales point downwards, and secrete a waxy substance that causes insects to lose their footing and fall into the trap. They are attracted by a sweet-smelling liquid secreted by glands (one at lower centre). Larger, spiny scales (not seen) stop large insects from climbing out of the trap. The trapped insects are digested by enzymes, providing the plant with nutrients not found where it grows. Magnification: x1670 when printed 10cm high

Carnivore Carnivorous Plants Insectivore Insectivorous Scale Scales Slippery Spines Spiny Surface Trap Waxy Sarracenia Flava

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of carnivorous plant leaf scales. The image, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), features the leaf scales of the yellow pitcher plant (Sarracenia flava). These remarkable structures are located on the inner surface of the leaves and play a crucial role in trapping unsuspecting insects. The downward-pointing scales secrete a waxy substance that causes insects to lose their grip, leading them to fall into the plant's trap. Attracted by a sweet-smelling liquid secreted by glands, insects become ensnared within this botanical marvel. Larger, unseen spiny scales prevent larger prey from escaping. As nature's ingenious design unfolds under magnification, we witness how these trapped insects serve as nourishment for the carnivorous plant. Enzymes present within its system digest these unfortunate creatures, providing vital nutrients not readily available in its natural habitat. With a magnification level of x1670 when printed at 10cm high, this SEM photograph offers an up-close exploration into one of nature's most fascinating adaptations. Its vibrant colors and intricate details highlight both the delicate beauty and predatory prowess possessed by carnivorous plants like Sarracenia flava. Immerse yourself in this mesmerizing snapshot from Science Photo Library and discover how even seemingly innocent flora can possess extraordinary survival strategies in their quest for sustenance.
