Cholera prevention, satirical artwork

Cholera prevention. Satirical artwork portraying a womans efforts to protect herself during an outbreak of cholera. Cholera is a bacterial infection of the intestines that was often fatal before modern treatments were developed. Chlorinated lime, smoke, herbs, and protective footwear were all used. At lower right, the similarly protected dog carries a syringe and a sign saying You need not fear. This artwork dates from around 1820. This version is from the German book Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satirical artwork from around 1820, depicting the efforts of a woman to protect herself during an outbreak of cholera. Cholera, a deadly bacterial infection of the intestines in the 19th century, had no modern treatments at that time. To prevent its spread, people used various methods such as chlorinated lime, smoke, herbs, and protective footwear. In this illustration, we see the woman holding an umbrella and wearing overshoes while carrying a basket filled with remedies. Interestingly, even her loyal dog is equipped with a syringe and carries a sign reassuringly stating "You need not fear". The artist behind this thought-provoking piece is Eugen Hollander (1867-1932), a German art historian and physician who explored caricature and satire in medicine. This particular version comes from his book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921. Through this artwork's monochrome style and attention to detail, it transports us back to an era when disease control was limited but creativity thrived. It serves as both historical documentation of medical practices during that time period and as social commentary on society's attempts to combat infectious diseases like cholera. Overall, this print offers us insight into the past while reminding us of humanity's ongoing battle against epidemics throughout history.
