Capercaillie, historical artwork

Capercaillie. Historical artwork of a male capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) on a branch. This is a large game bird that inhabits the cold forests of northern Eurasia. It can reach a length of up to 90 centimetres, with a wingspan of well over a metre, and an adult male may weigh up to five kilograms. It feeds mainly on berries and shoots. It became extinct in Britain but was reintroduced in the late 19th century. Its numbers recovered significantly, but they declined rapidly at the end of the 20th century, and it is now severely endangered. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork of a magnificent male capercaillie perched gracefully on a branch. The capercaillie, scientifically known as Tetrao urogallus, is an impressive game bird that thrives in the cold forests of northern Eurasia. With its striking appearance and commanding presence, this avian species can grow up to 90 centimetres in length, boasting a wingspan exceeding one metre. Adult males can weigh up to five kilograms. Feeding primarily on berries and shoots, the capercaillie's survival story has been tumultuous. Once declared extinct in Britain, it was successfully reintroduced during the late 19th century. Although its numbers experienced significant recovery at first, they faced another decline towards the end of the 20th century. Today, this majestic creature finds itself severely endangered. The artist behind this remarkable illustration is Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935), renowned for his exceptional talent in capturing nature's beauty through his drawings. This particular piece not only highlights Thorburn's artistic prowess but also serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility and vulnerability of our natural world. As we admire this rare glimpse into history through artistry and ornithology combined, let us reflect upon our responsibility to protect these threatened creatures and preserve their habitats for future generations to appreciate their splendorous existence.
