Californian sea lion with a tourist

Californian sea lion (Zalophus californianus) being photographed as it sleeps on a beach. This is a bull (male) sea lion. Bulls are much larger than females, and can reach 2.5 metres in length and 340 kilograms in weight. The Californian sea lion inhabits coastal regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean. It feeds mainly on fish and cephalopods (squid and octopus). It is a social animal, and comes ashore in large numbers. It seems to have a preference for man-made structures and in recent years it has caused problems by crowding onto jetties, piers and pontoons. Photographed in the Galapagos. The Galapagos population does not interact with the North American one

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene moment between a Californian sea lion and an intrigued tourist. The majestic bull sea lion, known for its impressive size, peacefully rests on the sandy beach of the Galapagos Islands. With males reaching lengths of up to 2.5 meters and weighing around 340 kilograms, this magnificent creature showcases its dominance in the animal kingdom. The Californian sea lion is native to coastal regions of the eastern Pacific Ocean and sustains itself by feeding primarily on fish and cephalopods like squid and octopus. As a social animal, it often gathers in large numbers along man-made structures such as jetties, piers, and pontoons. In recent years, their preference for these structures has caused some challenges due to overcrowding. In this particular photograph taken in the Galapagos Islands, we witness the unique population of Californian sea lions that do not interact with their North American counterparts. The image beautifully portrays the harmony between nature's wonders and human fascination as a caucasian tourist captures this incredible sight through his lens. With its stunning composition capturing both wildlife biology and human curiosity, this print from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder of our intricate connection with nature's diverse inhabitants while showcasing the awe-inspiring beauty found within our world's ecosystems.
