Butchers Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a botanical curiosity because it has no leaves. The things that look like leaves are actually cladodes (green flattened stems which are lance shaped with a spiny tip). The flowers, and later the fruits, are attached to the cladodes. The presence of the large scarlet berry shows that this is a female plant. The species occurs in dry woodland in the southern counties
