Branhamella catarrhalis bacteria

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Branhamella catarrhalis, formerly known as Neisseria catarrhalis, a species of Gram- negative bacteria which exists as one of the commonest commensals of the human nose and throat. Like Neisseriae such as the gonococcus, Branhamellae appear as pairs, called diplococci (centre of image). B. catarrhalis occasionally causes low-grade infections of the lower respiratory tract or acute infections of the middle ear (otitis media) in immune deficient patients. Treatment is with cephalosporins & erythromcin. Magnification: x11, 000 at 35mm size, x22, 000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of Branhamella catarrhalis bacteria, formerly known as Neisseria catarrhalis. As one of the most common commensals found in the human nose and throat, this Gram-negative species plays an intriguing role in our daily lives. Resembling pairs or diplococci at the center of the image, these bacteria share similarities with other Neisseriae such as the gonococcus. While typically harmless, B. catarrhalis can occasionally cause low-grade infections in the lower respiratory tract or acute infections like otitis media (middle ear infection) in individuals with compromised immune systems. Fortunately, treatment options include cephalosporins and erythromycin to combat these bacterial causes effectively. The magnification power used for capturing this image is truly remarkable: x11,000 at 35mm size and x22,000 at 6x7cm size. This level of detail allows us to appreciate the intricate structure and beauty present within these tiny microbes that often go unnoticed by our naked eyes. As we delve into bacteriology and microbiology through this stunning TEM photograph, we gain a deeper understanding of how microorganisms like Branhamella catarrhalis impact our health and well-being. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the microscopic world that surrounds us every day.
