Bouncing ball
Bouncing ball, stroboscopic image using coloured lights. The strobe light was set to flash 50 times every second, and the exposure time was about 1.5 seconds, so about 75 separate images were obtained on this single exposure. The sequence of images shows that the balls trajectory is a parabola, as predicted by theory. The sequence also shows the changing speed of the ball: the ball moves fastest near the ground and slowest at the top of an arc. The sequence also shows that the horizontal speed is approximately constant, and only the vertical speed is changing (due to gravity). The height of successive bounces is less as the ball loses energy by hitting the ground

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bouncing Ball" captures the essence of motion and energy in a mesmerizing display of colors. Using stroboscopic techniques with colored lights, this image showcases the ball's trajectory as it bounces through space. With the strobe light flashing 50 times per second and an exposure time of approximately 1.5 seconds, about 75 separate images were captured on a single exposure. The sequence of images not only confirms the theoretical prediction that the ball follows a parabolic path but also reveals fascinating insights into its changing speed. As expected, the ball moves fastest near the ground and slows down at the highest point of its arc due to gravity's influence. Interestingly, while horizontal speed remains relatively constant throughout, only vertical speed experiences variation. Moreover, this visual narrative highlights how each successive bounce results in diminishing height as energy is lost upon impact with the ground. The vibrant colors add an artistic touch to this scientific exploration, creating a visually stunning representation of classical mechanics in action. With elements encompassing mathematics, physics, potential and kinetic energy, this photograph offers both educational value and aesthetic appeal. It serves as a testament to our ability to capture complex physical phenomena through photography while simultaneously igniting curiosity about fundamental principles governing our world.
