Boeing B-52 landing in Moscow
B-52 landing. A Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber of the US Air Force lands in Moscow. It trails a large parachute used to slow it down after touchdown. The B-52 was introduced in 1955 as a strategic bomber carrying nuclear or conventional bombs. It is one of the icons of the Vietnam War, having been the aircraft used for indiscriminate carpet bombing of North Vietnam. It can carry up to 31.5 tonnes of ordnance with an unrefuelled range of up to 16, 000 km. The last aircraft were built in 1962, but various upgrades mean that they will stay in service until at least the 2040s. Photographed at the 2011 MAKS airshow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment as a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber gracefully lands in Moscow. The powerful aircraft, belonging to the US Air Force, is seen trailing a large parachute used to slow it down after touchdown. With its introduction in 1955, the B-52 became an iconic symbol of 20th-century military might and played a significant role during the Vietnam War. Known for its ability to carry both nuclear and conventional bombs, this strategic bomber could transport up to an astounding 31.5 tonnes of ordnance with an impressive unrefueled range of up to 16,000 km. Despite being built until 1962, continuous upgrades have ensured that these mighty machines will remain in service well into the future, potentially serving until at least the 2040s. The image was captured during the prestigious MAKS airshow held in Moscow back in 2011. It serves as a reminder of not only the Cold War tensions between Russia and America but also highlights how aviation technology has evolved over time. This photograph showcases both American power and Russian hospitality as this visitor from afar graces their runway. The presence of this legendary aircraft against the backdrop of Moscow's skyline evokes feelings of awe and respect for its historical significance. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess while reminding us of past conflicts that shaped our world today.
