Boeing 247 airliner, 1930s

Boeing 247 airliner. Passengers in the 1930s boarding a United Airlines and National Air Transport aircraft that is also being used as a US Mail flight (AM17 Express, shown on the tail of the plane). The aircrafts civil registration number (NC13334) is shown on the right-hand wing. United Airlines and National Air Transport were originally part of Boeing, but were split off from that company after the Air Mail Act of 1934 that required manufacturers and airlines to be separate companies. The Boeing 247 was introduced in 1933. It had a wingspan of 23 metres, a length of 16 metres, a crew of 3, and could carry 10 passengers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the 1930s showcases a Boeing 247 airliner, an iconic aircraft of its time. Passengers are seen boarding the United Airlines and National Air Transport plane, which also served as a US Mail flight with "AM17 Express" boldly displayed on its tail. The civil registration number "NC13334" is visible on the right-hand wing. During this era, both United Airlines and National Air Transport were part of Boeing's operations until they were separated due to the Air Mail Act of 1934. This legislation mandated that manufacturers and airlines had to be distinct entities. The Boeing 247, introduced in 1933, boasted impressive specifications including a wingspan of 23 meters, length of 16 meters, crew capacity for three individuals, and accommodation for up to ten passengers. It represented a significant advancement in aviation technology during that period. In this historical image captured by Library of Congress, we witness men and women eagerly preparing for their journey aboard this remarkable passenger plane. A diverse group can be observed - Caucasian and African American individuals alike - reflecting the inclusive nature of air travel even back then. This photograph not only offers us a glimpse into aviation history but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and progress in transportation technology throughout the twentieth century.
