Bloodworm head, SEM C019 / 0229

Bloodworm (Chironomus tetans) head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The bloodworm is the freshwater larva of a midge. It is able to live in stagnant water and muddy pools because the haemoglobin in its body helps to absorb what little oxygen there is. It is also this haemoglobin which leads to the red colour from which the larva gains its common name. It is used in fishing as bait. Magnification: x500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

Entomological Freshwater Larva Larval Life Stage Midge Pond Life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Bloodworm head, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The Bloodworm, scientifically known as Chironomus tetans, is the larval stage of a midge found in freshwater environments. Its ability to survive in stagnant water and muddy pools can be attributed to its unique adaptation - haemoglobin. This vital pigment helps the larvae absorb what little oxygen is available in their habitat. The vibrant red coloration that characterizes these larvae stems from their high concentration of haemoglobin, hence earning them the name "Bloodworm". Apart from being visually striking, this feature also makes them highly sought-after bait for fishing enthusiasts. In this photograph, taken by Steve Gschmeissner and sourced from Science Photo Library's extensive collection, we are presented with an up-close view of the Bloodworm's head. Against a black background, every minute detail becomes apparent – from its delicate antennae to its segmented body structure. With a magnification level of x500 when printed at 10 centimeters wide, this image allows us to appreciate the wonders hidden within nature's smallest creatures. This mesmerizing snapshot not only appeals to those interested in zoology and entomology but also serves as a reminder of how diverse and fascinating life on Earth truly is.
