Blood vessels of chest and neck

Blood vessels of the chest and neck, historical anatomical artwork. The thoracic (chest) cavity has been dissected in this anterior (front) view to reveal part of the aorta, the largest artery in the human body. The aorta forms an arch (central, u-shaped) just above the heart, and then descends through the thorax and diaphragm (bottom, dumbbell-shaped) into the abdomen. The carotid arteries emerge from the aortic arch and carry blood up the neck to the head and brain. The lungs have been removed here but the bronchi (centre, grey/white) can be seen next to the aortic arch. This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century anatomical artwork showcases the intricate blood vessels of the chest and neck. The thoracic cavity has been meticulously dissected in this anterior view, revealing a portion of the aorta, which is the largest artery in the human body. Just above the heart, the aorta forms an arch that gracefully descends through the thorax and diaphragm into the abdomen. The carotid arteries emerge from this central u-shaped aortic arch, carrying vital blood up to nourish both our head and brain. Although removed for clarity in this illustration, one can still observe the bronchi next to the aortic arch - grey-white structures representing our lung's airways. Taken from "The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery" an esteemed French textbook by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob, this historical image offers invaluable insights into surgical practices during that era. Its artistic portrayal beautifully combines scientific accuracy with aesthetic appeal. With its rich history and meticulous attention to detail, this artwork serves as a testament to humanity's ongoing quest for knowledge about our own bodies. It highlights not only our fascination with anatomy but also underscores how far we have come in understanding complex biological systems such as muscles and arteries. This remarkable print from Science Photo Library invites us on an enlightening journey through time while celebrating both artistry and scientific exploration within medical history.
