Black rhinoceros drinking

Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) male drinking. This large herbivore inhabits the open forests and scrub of south-eastern Africa. Its home range always includes at least one or two watering places, as it drinks daily and likes to wallow. This male may have sustained his numerous scars in fights with other males over territory or females. The black rhinoceros eats mainly shoots and leaves, although its diet also includes tree bark. Extensive hunting for its horns, which have long been thought of as an aphrodisiac, means that it is now highly endangered. Photographed in the Mkuzi Game Reserve, South Africa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a majestic Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) male as it indulges in a refreshing drink. Found in the open forests and scrublands of southeastern Africa, this magnificent herbivore relies on at least one or two watering holes within its home range to quench its thirst and enjoy leisurely wallows. The numerous scars adorning this male's rugged body bear witness to fierce battles fought with other males over territory or mates. Feeding primarily on shoots and leaves, with occasional tree bark treats, the black rhinoceros is an integral part of its ecosystem. However, their existence is now perilously threatened due to extensive hunting driven by the misguided belief that their horns possess aphrodisiac properties. Photographed against the stunning backdrop of Mkuzi Game Reserve in South Africa, this image serves as a poignant reminder of both the beauty and vulnerability of African wildlife. With every passing day, these horned giants inch closer towards extinction. As we admire this rare glimpse into nature's wonders, let us also reflect upon our responsibility to protect these endangered creatures for future generations. This photograph from Science Photo Library encapsulates not just a single moment frozen in time but also serves as an urgent call for conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding these remarkable animals before it's too late.
