Bigeye trevally
Bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) circling. The trevally, or jackfish, congregates in large schools during the day, seeking safety in numbers from predators. The resulting wall of fast-moving fish makes it difficult for a predator to focus on a single target. At night the school fragments to feed, mainly on smaller fish and crustaceans. The trevally can reach lengths of 120 centimetres and weigh up to 18 kilograms. It inhabits tropical and subtropical coastal waters near reefs and is regarded as an excellent human food source. Photographed off Sipadan Island, Malaysia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing sight of Bigeye trevally, also known as Caranx sexfasciatus, circling in a magnificent display. These jackfish gather in immense schools during daylight hours, finding safety in numbers to evade potential predators. The sheer number and rapid movement of these fish create an impenetrable wall that confuses any would-be attacker, making it nearly impossible for them to focus on a single target. As night falls, this formidable school fragments into smaller groups to feed on smaller fish and crustaceans. With lengths reaching up to 120 centimeters and weighing up to 18 kilograms, the Bigeye trevally is an impressive species inhabiting tropical and subtropical coastal waters near reefs. Not only is it regarded as an excellent source of food for humans but its presence adds vibrancy to marine ecosystems. Photographed off the enchanting Sipadan Island in Malaysia's pristine waters, this image captures the essence of underwater life at its finest. The multiple layers of swirling trevally showcase their carnivorous nature while highlighting their importance within the intricate web of marine wildlife. With its rich hues and dynamic composition, this print from Science Photo Library encapsulates the beauty found beneath our oceans' surface. It serves as a reminder of both the delicate balance and awe-inspiring diversity present within our natural world.
