Bass scale, light micrograph
Bass scale. Polarised light micrograph of a ctenoid scale from the skin of a bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The scales are just under the fishs skin and form a protective skeleton. Each scale plate consists of a lower fibrous plate and an upper clear plate of dentine. Dentine is added to the edge of the plate each year. In the summer the plate grows faster (thick ring) than in the winter (thin ring), so each years growth is demarcated. On this scale, there are around twenty concentric growth rings, which means the bass is approximately twenty years old. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a bass scale under polarized light. The ctenoid scale, extracted from the skin of a majestic bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), serves as both protection and skeletal support for this remarkable fish. Each scale plate consists of two layers: a lower fibrous plate and an upper clear plate made of dentine. The growth rings on this particular scale provide valuable insights into the age of the bass. Approximately twenty concentric rings can be observed, indicating that this individual is around twenty years old. These rings form as dentine is added to the edge of each plate annually, with faster growth occurring during summer months (thick ring) compared to winter (thin ring). Consequently, these distinct demarcations allow scientists to accurately date each year's growth. Through magnification at x10 when printed at 10 centimeters across, we are able to appreciate the delicate details and biomineral composition present in this single-scale specimen. This image not only highlights the fascinating anatomy and biology behind fish scales but also offers a glimpse into marine biology and ichthyology research. Nature enthusiasts, animal lovers, zoologists, or anyone captivated by biological wonders will find themselves drawn to this mesmerizing photograph captured by Science Photo Library.
