Autonomous airborne refuelling testing C016 / 0584

Autonomous airborne refuelling testing. F-18 Hornet aircraft being refuelled in mid-air during a flight to test autonomous airborne refuelling technology. This project, given the name of Autonomous Airborne Refueling Demonstration (aRD), took place from 2005 to 2007. On this flight, the pilot Dick Ewers, and flight test engineer Leslie Molzahn, are seen with their hands raised from the controls as the aircraft flew itself into the refuelling drogue (right). This research aids the development of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) refuelling. Photographed on 2 May 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a groundbreaking moment in aviation history. The image showcases the Autonomous Airborne Refueling Demonstration (aRD) project, which aimed to test and develop autonomous airborne refueling technology from 2005 to 2007. In this particular flight, an F-18 Hornet aircraft is seen mid-air, being refueled autonomously as it flies itself into the refueling drogue. The photograph highlights two key figures in this pioneering endeavor - pilot Dick Ewers and flight test engineer Leslie Molzahn. With their hands raised from the controls, they witness firsthand the successful integration of autonomous technology in aerial refueling. Their presence symbolizes the collaboration between human expertise and technological advancements that propel aviation forward. This research holds immense significance for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by aiding their development in terms of extended range and operational capabilities through efficient refueling methods. As we delve further into the 21st century, such innovations are crucial for enhancing military operations and expanding transportation possibilities. Taken on May 2nd, 2007 at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, this photograph exemplifies American ingenuity and engineering prowess. It serves as a testament to our continuous pursuit of excellence in aerospace technology while pushing boundaries beyond what was once deemed possible. Captured by Lori Losey for Science Photo Library on behalf of NASA, this image encapsulates both the awe-inspiring nature of flight and humanity's relentless quest for progress within the realm of aviation.
