Aurora borealis display with setting Moon
Aurora. Green aurora borealis (northern lights) display over a field of ice with a setting Moon. Aurorae are caused by charged particles from the Sun stimulating gas molecules in the Earths atmosphere to emit light. They are more common around the poles as the Earths magnetic field directs the charged particles there. They occur at an altitude of around 100 kilometres. Photographed from Manitoba, Canada, in March 1999
