Aurora borealis display reflected upon water

An aurora borealis display (northern lights) reflected on the surface of water. Aurorae are caused by the interaction between energetic charged particles coming from the Sun and molecules of gases in the upper atmosphere (about 100km). A stream of charged particles, known as the solar wind, flows continuously from the Suns corona towards interplanetary space at speeds of 400-500 km/s. These particles do not reach the Earths atmosphere due to the shielding effect of the Earths magnetic field. However, violent solar activities such as solar flares emit highly energetic particles which penetrate this shield and ionise molecules in the atmosphere

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ethereal beauty of an Aurora borealis display reflected upon water. The mesmerizing dance of colors in the night sky is a result of the interaction between energetic charged particles from the Sun and molecules of gases in our upper atmosphere. These stunning celestial phenomena, also known as northern lights, occur approximately 100km above Earth's surface. The solar wind, a continuous stream of charged particles flowing from the Sun's corona towards interplanetary space at incredible speeds, is responsible for creating these awe-inspiring displays. Normally, Earth's magnetic field shields us from these particles reaching our atmosphere. However, during intense solar activities like solar flares, highly energetic particles manage to penetrate this protective shield and ionize molecules in our atmosphere. In this photograph by Science Photo Library, we witness nature's own light show reflecting on calm waters below. The electromagnetic effect produced by aurorae creates a breathtaking spectacle that seems almost otherworldly. It serves as a reminder of the intricate connections between our planet and its cosmic surroundings. This image not only showcases one of Earth science's most fascinating atmospheric phenomena but also reminds us of the wonders that lie beyond our everyday experiences. Let it transport you into a realm where science meets art and leaves you marveling at the boundless beauty found within our universe.
