Attila, Emperor of the Huns

Attila (406-453), Emperor of the Huns. Originating from the steppes of Central Asia, the Huns swept westwards and established the large Hunnic Empire, which stretched as far west as Germany and as far south as the Danube. Under Attilas rule, the Huns invaded the Balkans and Gaul, and gained a reputation for cruelty and barbarism. This woodcut portrait is from the 1575 Basle edition of Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium (Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War) by the Italian historian and biographer Paolo Giovio (1483-1552)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodcut portrait depicts Attila, Emperor of the Huns, a formidable ruler who left an indelible mark on history. Born in 406 AD in the vast steppes of Central Asia, Attila led his nomadic people westward to establish the mighty Hunnic Empire. Stretching from Germany to the Danube River, this empire became synonymous with power and conquest. Under Attila's command, the Huns launched audacious invasions into both Balkans and Gaul, striking fear into their enemies' hearts. However, it was their reputation for cruelty and barbarism that truly set them apart. This image captures the essence of Attila's character as a ruthless commander who commanded respect through force. Created by Paolo Giovio in 1575 as part of his renowned work "Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War" this woodcut print showcases not only Attila's physical features but also his commanding presence. The monochrome artwork adds depth and intensity to his piercing gaze and strong facial features. The artist Christoffel van Sichem skillfully brings forth every detail with precision while Tobias Stimmer contributes to its historical accuracy. This remarkable piece transports us back to a pivotal era when empires clashed and legends were born. As we contemplate this powerful portrayal of one of history's most infamous figures, we are reminded that even amidst darkness and brutality, art has the ability to preserve stories that shape our understanding of human nature throughout time.
