Atmosphere and airglow seen from Shuttle

View of the airglow of Earths atmosphere, seen at sunset from Space Shuttle Atlantis. The blue colour is caused by reflections of the suns light in the atmosphere. Orange sunlit clouds are seen just below the horizon as the sun sets. To the left of centre is the planet Venus, destination for the Magellan probe deployed during this mission, STS-30. Shuttle Atlantis was launched on 4 May 1989, deploying Magellan six hours into the flight. The rest of the mission was devoted to a mix of materials and life science experiments. Atlantis made a safe return to Earth on 8 May 1989 after 64 orbits

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing atmosphere and airglow of Earth as seen from Space Shuttle Atlantis. The stunning blue hue, caused by reflections of the sun's light in our planet's atmosphere, creates a breathtaking backdrop against which orange sunlit clouds can be observed just below the horizon during sunset. In this remarkable image, we are also treated to a celestial spectacle: Venus, shining brightly to the left of center. It was towards this very planet that the Magellan probe embarked on its mission during STS-30, after being deployed six hours into Atlantis' flight. This historic journey took place on 4 May 1989. The significance of this photograph extends beyond its aesthetic appeal; it symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration. As Atlantis orbited Earth for 64 times during its mission, it dedicated itself not only to scientific experiments but also to advancing materials and life sciences. This particular print is a testament to both organic beauty and cutting-edge technology. Its vivid colors have been enhanced using false color techniques through scanning electron microscopy—showcasing nanotechnology at work. However, it is important to note that this image should not be associated with any commercial use or mention thereof. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this extraordinary capture invites us all to marvel at the wonders of our world while inspiring future generations in their quest for scientific discovery.
