Astronomy & the electromagnetic spectrum

Astronomy and the electromagnetic spectrum. The EM spectrum runs from gamma rays (left), via X-rays, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared, to radio waves (right). Some spectral bands (radio, IR, optical) can employ sea-level or mountain-top telescopes. Other bands (notably UV, gamma, X-ray) suffer from absorption of EM radiation by Earths atmosphere. They use balloons, planes and satellites to take telescopes into the upper atmosphere or outer space. Powerful sources of EM radiation are active galaxies (top left) in the gamma and X-ray bands, star-forming regions in infrared (top centre), supernova remnants and the glow of radiation from the Big Bang (top right) in the radio band

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the vastness of astronomy and the electromagnetic spectrum. From left to right, we witness the incredible range of wavelengths that make up this spectrum. Starting with gamma rays, which are followed by X-rays, ultraviolet light, optical waves, and infrared radiation before culminating in radio waves on the right. However, not all spectral bands can be observed from sea-level or mountain-top telescopes due to Earth's atmosphere absorbing certain types of electromagnetic radiation. To overcome this limitation, scientists employ balloons, planes, and satellites to carry telescopes into the upper atmosphere or outer space. The image also highlights some powerful sources of EM radiation found in different regions of the spectrum. Active galaxies dominate in gamma and X-ray bands at the top left corner while star-forming regions emit intense infrared radiation at the top center. Supernova remnants and remnants from the Big Bang itself glow brightly within the radio band at the top right corner. This stunning artwork beautifully captures both scientific knowledge and artistic expression as it brings together various elements related to astrophysics and optical telescope technology. It serves as a reminder of humanity's continuous exploration into space using advanced astronomy detectors along with our fascination for understanding every aspect of our universe through studying its electromagnetic spectrum.
