Artwork of two Deinonychus dinosaurs

Deinonychus dinosaurs. Artwork of two Deinonychus (" terrible claw" ) dinosaurs. Deinonychus was a predator with large eyes, a powerful jaw and a long, curved claw on its hind legs. This claw was held off the ground so that it remained sharp. The claw was probably used to slash at prey that was being held by Deinonychus forearms. Multiple fossils of Deinonychus have been found near those of larger herbivorous dinosaurs, suggesting that it hunted big prey in packs. Deinonychus was about 3.3 metres long and as tall as a human. Its long, stiff tail counterbalanced its forward-leaning body as it ran on its hind legs. It lived about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period

Cretaceous Dinosaur Dinosaur Deinonychus Palaeontology

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases two Deinonychus dinosaurs, commonly known as the "terrible claw". With their large eyes and powerful jaws, these predators were a force to be reckoned with. However, it is their distinctive feature that truly sets them apart – a long, curved claw on their hind legs. The artist has beautifully depicted this unique characteristic by showing the claw held off the ground, ensuring its sharpness remained intact. It is believed that Deinonychus used this formidable weapon to slash at prey while gripping it firmly with its forearms. The fossils discovered near those of larger herbivorous dinosaurs suggest that Deinonychus hunted in packs, taking down even the most substantial of prey. Measuring approximately 3.3 meters in length and standing as tall as a human, Deinonychus possessed a forward-leaning body balanced by its long and stiff tail. This allowed for incredible agility and speed as it ran on its hind legs through the ancient landscapes of the Cretaceous period around 110 million years ago. This mesmerizing print from Science Photo Library not only captures the essence of these remarkable creatures but also serves as a testament to our fascination with paleontology. It reminds us of Earth's rich history and offers an intriguing glimpse into prehistoric life when mighty dinosaurs roamed our planet.
