Artwork of comet Hale-Bopp over a tree landscape

Comet Hale-Bopp. Artists impression of comet Hale-Bopp passing over a silhouetted rural land- scape of trees. The Milky Way galaxy seen in the background runs diagonally from upper centre to lower right. A comet is a ball of ice and dust that orbits our Sun. As it passes near the Sun its surface evaporates releasing a tail of dust and vapour that can reach millions of kilometres in length. The tail always extends in the opposite direction to the Sun, whatever direction the comet is travelling in. Comet Hale-Bopp was discovered on 23 July 1995. It is predicted to be a bright object in the night sky over Earth in March 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the majestic beauty of comet Hale-Bopp as it gracefully glides over a serene landscape of trees. The artist's impression perfectly captures the ethereal essence of this celestial phenomenon against the backdrop of a star-studded Milky Way galaxy, which elegantly spans across the canvas from upper centre to lower right. Comets like Hale-Bopp are enchanting cosmic bodies composed of ice and dust that orbit our Sun. As they venture closer to our star, their surfaces evaporate, giving birth to an awe-inspiring tail made up of dust and vapour that can stretch for millions of kilometres. Interestingly, regardless of its trajectory through space, a comet's tail always extends in the opposite direction to the Sun. Discovered on 23 July 1995, Comet Hale-Bopp is anticipated to become a luminous spectacle in Earth's night sky come March 1997. This artwork not only celebrates its impending arrival but also pays homage to humanity's fascination with cometary wonders throughout history. Science Photo Library presents this stunning print as an amalgamation between science, astronomy, and artistry. It serves as a reminder that even amidst our busy lives on Earth, we are partakers in an ever-expanding universe filled with extraordinary phenomena waiting to be explored and admired.
