Artwork of the celestial northern hemisphere

Northern hemisphere stars. Computer artwork of the brightest stars visible in the northern hemi- sphere, with lines of latitude (circles) and longitude (radii). The star clouds of the Milky Way appear as grey areas. The celestial north pole (which lies over Earths north pole) is at centre, with the celestial equator forming the outermost circle. As the Earth spins during the night, an observer would see the stars apparently moving in circles around the north pole. The bright star near the north pole is Polaris, the Pole Star; it is a valuable aid to navigation because it hardly moves at all. (See image R800/154 for the southern hemisphere)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the celestial northern hemisphere in all its glory. Created through computer artwork, it beautifully depicts the brightest stars visible from this region. The intricate lines of latitude and longitude create a mesmerizing pattern, resembling an elaborate cosmic web. The grey areas represent the awe-inspiring star clouds of our Milky Way galaxy, adding a touch of ethereal beauty to the composition. At the very center lies the celestial north pole, mirroring Earth's own north pole. Encircling it is the celestial equator, forming the outermost circle. As night falls and our planet spins on its axis, an observer would witness a breathtaking sight: stars seemingly moving in perfect circles around Polaris – also known as the Pole Star – which shines brightly near the north pole. This remarkable phenomenon has made Polaris an invaluable aid for navigation throughout history due to its almost stationary position. With elements of science, astronomy, cosmology, and art intertwined within this image, it serves as both a visual feast for stargazers and an educational tool for those interested in understanding our vast universe. This stunning star map invites us to contemplate our place within this grand cosmic tapestry while igniting curiosity about what lies beyond our earthly realm.
