Artists impression of the Martian moon Phobos

Phobos, the larger of the two satellites of Mars, orbits the planet just 6000km above its surface. Measuring 27x21x19km, Phobos is dominated by the great crater Stickney, which is 8km across. Parallel grooves radiate from Stickney & may be evidence of the severe fracturing caused by the impact which formed the crater & almost blew the moon apart. Phobos is composed of a black material that reflects only 3-5% of the sunlight striking it. Phobos orbits Mars in 7.7 hours in a synchronous orbit, which means that the same hemisphere is always facing the planet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's impression of Phobos, one of Mars' enigmatic moons. Standing as the larger of the two satellites orbiting Mars, Phobos hovers a mere 6000km above the planet's surface. With dimensions measuring 27x21x19km, this celestial body is dominated by the awe-inspiring Stickney crater, spanning a remarkable 8km in diameter. The impact that formed Stickney left its mark on Phobos, fracturing it severely and almost tearing it apart. Evidence of this cataclysmic event can be seen through parallel grooves radiating from Stickney's center. These grooves serve as a testament to the immense forces at play during the moon's creation. Phobos possesses an intriguing composition; its surface is composed primarily of a black material that reflects only a minuscule fraction (3-5%) of sunlight striking it. This unique characteristic adds to its mystique and sets it apart from other celestial bodies within our solar system. Intriguingly, Phobos orbits Mars every 7.7 hours in what is known as a synchronous orbit. This means that one hemisphere perpetually faces towards the Red Planet while journeying through space. Through this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library, we are granted a glimpse into the cosmic wonders present within our universe – reminding us once again how truly extraordinary and diverse our planetary neighbors can be.
