Artists impression of the asteroid Hektor

Artists impression of the asteroid Hektor, the largest of the Trojan asteroids. Hektor is highly elongated, & when viewed from Earth its brightness varies by a factor of three. It is 298 km long, but no one knows what it looks like. One theory is that it was formed by a low-speed collision between two smaller asteroids, which then stuck together to form a peanut-shaped double asteroid. Or it may consist of two asteroids orbiting each other very closely. The Trojan asteroids are so called because they follow the orbit of Jupiter & are not in the Asteroid Belt between Mars & Jupiter. There are 2 groups of Trojans, one 60 degrees ahead of Jupiter & one 60 degress behind

Asteroid Cosmology Hektor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artist's impression of the enigmatic asteroid Hektor, which is believed to be the largest among the Trojan asteroids. With its highly elongated shape and a brightness that fluctuates by threefold when observed from Earth, Hektor remains an intriguing celestial mystery. Measuring an impressive 298 kilometers in length, this colossal space rock has managed to keep its true appearance hidden from us. Scientists have put forth two compelling theories regarding Hektor's formation. One suggests that it emerged from a gentle collision between two smaller asteroids, resulting in their fusion into a distinctive peanut-shaped double asteroid. Alternatively, Hektor might comprise of two separate asteroids orbiting each other at an incredibly close distance. The Trojan asteroids derive their name due to their unique characteristic of trailing Jupiter's orbit rather than being part of the Asteroid Belt situated between Mars and Jupiter. These Trojans can be categorized into two groups: one positioned 60 degrees ahead of Jupiter and another located 60 degrees behind it. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how much there is yet to discover within our vast universe. The beauty and complexity found within celestial bodies like Hektor continue to inspire astronomers and cosmologists alike as they strive to unravel the secrets held within these distant worlds beyond our reach.
