Artificial heart valve

False-colour angiogram (X-ray image) of the human heart, showing a mechanical Starr-Edwards aortic heart valve. A normal aortic valve regulates the flow of blood from the left ventricle into the aorta, the bodys main artery, for distribution around the circulation. The valve consists of three cusps, shaped like half-moons. Malfunctions of the valve include fusion of the cusps, often the result of the scarring that follows rheumatic fever. This results in a narrowing of the valves opening (aortic stenosis) with a consequent reduction in blood flow. An incompetent aortic valve may also cause blood to reflux back into the left ventricle (aortic regurgitation)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour angiogram, an X-ray image that reveals the intricate details of the human heart. At its center lies a remarkable mechanical Starr-Edwards aortic heart valve, designed to replace a malfunctioning natural valve. The normal function of an aortic valve is to regulate blood flow from the left ventricle into the body's main artery, known as the aorta. This vital pathway ensures efficient distribution of oxygenated blood throughout our circulation. The artificial heart valve depicted here consists of three cusps resembling elegant half-moons. Unfortunately, various factors can lead to malfunctions in this crucial component. Scarring resulting from rheumatic fever often causes fusion between cusps, leading to narrowing and reduced blood flow (aortic stenosis). Additionally, an incompetent aortic valve may allow blood to reflux back into the left ventricle (aortic regurgitation). Thankfully, medical advancements have provided us with innovative solutions like this blue-tinted artificial heart valve. Implantation of such prosthetic devices has become essential for patients suffering from cardiac conditions that compromise their health and well-being. This photograph not only highlights cutting-edge technology but also serves as a reminder of how medicine continues to evolve in its quest for improved healthcare outcomes. It symbolizes hope for those affected by cardiovascular diseases and underscores the critical role played by scientific research and innovation in saving lives.
