Archimedes, Greek mathematician

Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287-212 BC), Greek mathematician, physicist and engineer. Archimedes is regarded as the greatest mathematician of ancient times. He used geometry to measure the volume of solids, and calculated an approximation of pi correct to 3 decimal places. He is said to have discovered the Archimedes principle whilst taking a bath. This principle states that a body immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. Engraving from Vies des Savants Illustres (1877)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Archimedes, a Greek mathematician, physicist, and engineer who lived during the 3rd century BC. Renowned as the greatest mathematician of ancient times, Archimedes made significant contributions to various fields of study. Using his profound knowledge of geometry, he developed methods to accurately measure the volume of solids and even approximated pi correct to three decimal places. Legend has it that while indulging in a bath, Archimedes stumbled upon a groundbreaking discovery known as the Archimedes principle. This principle states that when an object is submerged in a fluid, it experiences an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the displaced fluid. This revelation revolutionized our understanding of hydrostatics and laid the foundation for further advancements in physics. The monochrome engraving beautifully captures this iconic figure from antiquity with intricate details highlighting his profile and classical features. The artistry transports us back in time to witness this brilliant mind at work. Archimedes' legacy continues to inspire generations with his remarkable intellect and innovative ideas that shaped our understanding of mathematics and science. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of his immense contributions to human knowledge and marvel at how one man's brilliance can transcend centuries.
