Alveolus in human lung

Alveolus. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an alveolus (blue cavity), one of the microscopic air sacs of the lungs. Adjacent alveoli are separated by a porous membrane (light red) known as the interalveolar septum. An intricate network of capillaries occupies this membrane and it is in this network that the exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place. The larger ridges in the alveolus denote the positions of underlying capillaries whereas the dark areas are openings, the interalveolar pores, which connect adjacent alveoli. Magnification: x1050 at 6x7cm size. x1675 at 4x5ins

Alveolus Capillary Lung Lungs Magnified Image Microscopic Photos Respiratory System Subjects False Coloured

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate structure of the human lung. The image showcases an alveolus, one of the countless microscopic air sacs that make up our respiratory system. In this false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are able to appreciate the beauty and complexity of this vital organ. The alveolus is depicted as a striking blue cavity, surrounded by its neighboring counterparts separated by a porous membrane known as the interalveolar septum, which appears in light red. This thin membrane hosts a network of capillaries responsible for facilitating the exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen during respiration. As we zoom in closer, we can observe larger ridges within the alveolus indicating underlying capillary positions. Additionally, dark areas represent openings called interalveolar pores that connect adjacent alveoli. With magnification levels reaching x1050 at 6x7cm size or x1675 at 4x5ins, this photograph truly allows us to marvel at the remarkable intricacy present within our lungs. Through images like these, Science Photo Library continues to provide invaluable visual resources for scientific exploration and education.
