All-sky camera

All-sky camera (ASC) beneath its protective dome at the Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Alaska, USA. The northern location of the PFRR allows this ASC to be used for auroral research. The ASC is used to follow the variation in auroral activity through the night. Aurorae are atmospheric light displays (visible at night in the polar regions) that result from solar activity. PFRR is primarily a launch facility for sounding (non-orbiting) rockets. Other equipment used at PFRR to research the Arctic atmosphere includes meteorological balloons and polar-orbiting satellites. PFRR is operated by the University of Alaskas Geophysical Institute and funded by NASA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the All-sky camera (ASC) nestled beneath its protective dome at the Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), located in Alaska, USA. Positioned in the northern region, PFRR offers an ideal vantage point for auroral research. The ASC plays a crucial role in monitoring and documenting the mesmerizing variations in auroral activity throughout the night. Aurorae, these enchanting atmospheric light displays visible primarily at night in polar regions, are a result of solar activity. With its cutting-edge technology and precise optical equipment, this ASC captures every intricate detail of these celestial phenomena. Operated by the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute and funded by NASA, PFRR serves as both a launch facility for sounding rockets and a hub for studying Arctic atmosphere. In addition to the ASC, other scientific instruments such as meteorological balloons and polar-orbiting satellites are employed at PFRR to delve deeper into understanding our climate system. This photograph not only highlights the importance of this research range but also emphasizes America's commitment to advancing astrophysics and atmospheric sciences. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, this image encapsulates both natural beauty and scientific exploration. It invites us to marvel at nature's wonders while appreciating mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge about our universe.
