Alien planet forming

Alien planet forming. Computer model of planet formation in a more massive protoplanetary disc than that from which our Solar System formed. The planet (white) is at centre. Arrows (yellow) show disc components movements. Protoplanetary discs comprise gas left from a stars formation. The planet has swept out a clear area (dark) in the gas. Computer models such as this have shown that the formation of one massive planet triggers the formation of other planets from the gas on the edges of the cleared area. This causes high-mass planets to form close to a star, as has been seen in several extrasolar planetary systems. This work was done at the University of Toronto, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer model of an alien planet forming within a more massive protoplanetary disc than the one from which our Solar System originated. At the heart of this mesmerizing image lies the planet itself, depicted in pristine white. The vibrant yellow arrows elegantly illustrate the intricate movements of various components within the disc. Protoplanetary discs are composed of gas remnants left behind after a star's formation, and here we witness how this gas has been cleared out by the developing planet, creating a distinct dark area around it. Fascinatingly, extensive research using computer models like this has revealed that when one massive planet forms, it triggers the birth of other planets on the edges of these cleared regions. The implications are profound as high-mass planets tend to emerge closer to their parent stars – an observation corroborated by numerous extrasolar planetary systems discovered thus far. This groundbreaking work was conducted at Canada's esteemed University of Toronto, underscoring its significance in advancing our understanding of alien planetary systems and shedding light on cosmological mysteries. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library not only serves as a testament to human ingenuity but also invites us to ponder upon the vastness and diversity present beyond our own celestial neighborhood.
