EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a fascinating glimpse into the world of alchemy during the 18th century. The image features an intricate listing of alchemical symbols, meticulously arranged in alphabetical order and written in French. These symbols were used by alchemists to represent various chemicals, elements, objects, and processes. The print reveals a rich tapestry of knowledge with examples such as steel (acier), crystal (cristal), and silver (argent) - represented by the symbol for the Moon. It also includes astrological symbols that were intertwined with alchemical practices. Notably, this collection encompasses classical elements like air (air) and water (eau). Additionally, it delves into reagents such as aqua fortis (eau fortis or nitric acid), aqua regia (eau regale or a mixture of acids), and aqua vitae (esprit de vin or ethanol). These symbolic representations served as a precursor to modern chemical nomenclature which emerged towards the end of the 18th century. As scientific understanding advanced, these ancient symbols gradually gave way to more standardized names for chemicals and elements. This historical artwork offers us insight into the evolution of chemistry while highlighting its deep roots in astrology and mysticism. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout history.
