Aircraft sonic boom cloud

Sonic boom aircraft. Cloud forming behind an aircraft as it breaks the sound barrier. As the aircraft moves through the air, an area of low pressure forms behind it. When the pressure of this air parcel falls below the vapour pressure of gaseous water, the water in the air condenses to form the cloud. Different atmospheric conditions cause the phenomenon to occur at different aircraft speeds. This is an American F/A-18 Hornet. Photographed over the Pacific Ocean on 7 July 1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when an American F/A-18 Hornet breaks the sound barrier, creating a remarkable aircraft sonic boom cloud. As this high-speed fighter jet propels through the air, it generates an area of low pressure behind it, causing a fascinating natural phenomenon to occur. The formation of this unique cloud is a result of physics and atmospheric conditions coming together in perfect harmony. When the pressure within the air parcel drops below the vapour pressure of gaseous water, tiny droplets condense and form a striking cloud trail that trails behind the aircraft. Photographed over the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean on 7 July 1999, this image showcases not only cutting-edge technology but also highlights mankind's mastery over aviation and transportation. The F/A-18 Hornet represents precision engineering at its finest, pushing boundaries and defying limitations. As we gaze upon this extraordinary snapshot captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both our fascination with speed and our relentless pursuit to conquer new frontiers. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity while showcasing nature's ability to respond dynamically to our advancements in science and technology. Let us marvel at this breathtaking display where artistry meets scientific wonder—a visual reminder that there is still so much left for us to explore beyond what lies within reach.
