San Andreas fault, aerial view

Aerial photograph of the San Andreas fault as it crosses the Carrizo Plain some 450km (300 miles) south of San Francisco & 160km (100 miles) north of Los Angeles. One of the worlds great seismic faults, the San Andreas extends almost the full length of California & is responsible for major earthquakes. It is seen here as the narrow, valley-like scar running from bottom right to top centre of the picture. The desolate landscape consists of pressure ridges formed as a result of hundreds of fault movements. The Carrizo Plain is at right, the elevated Elkhorn Scarp at left. This is the place where the San Andreas fault is at its most spectacular

Carrizo Plain Earthquake San Andreas Fault Seismology

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the awe-inspiring San Andreas fault as it cuts through the Carrizo Plain, situated 450km south of San Francisco and 160km north of Los Angeles. As one of the world's most significant seismic faults, the San Andreas fault spans almost the entire length of California and has been responsible for numerous major earthquakes throughout history. In this image, we witness its presence as a narrow yet prominent scar that stretches from the bottom right to the top center. The desolate landscape surrounding this geological marvel is adorned with pressure ridges resulting from countless fault movements over time. The Carrizo Plain can be observed on the right side, while on the left stands the elevated Elkhorn Scarp. This particular location offers an unparalleled glimpse into where nature's forces are at their most spectacular along this renowned fault line. Captured by Science Photo Library, this stunning print invites us to contemplate both Earth's remarkable geology and our vulnerability to seismic events. It serves as a reminder that beneath our feet lies a dynamic planet capable of shaping landscapes in extraordinary ways. Whether you're fascinated by geology, earthquakes, or seismology, this image encapsulates not only scientific significance but also an undeniable aesthetic appeal that will leave viewers captivated by its raw beauty and immense power.
