The Arctic, night-day satellite image
Asia, night-day satellite image. This composite image of the Earth is set against a background of stars, and is centred on the continent of Asia. North is at top. The left-hand half of the globe is at night, and city lights (yellow) show areas of dense population. The right-hand half of the globe is lit by sunlight and shows clouds (white), seas and oceans (blue), and land cover: vegetation (green) and arid areas (brown). This day-night line is the dawn terminator. This image, from 2001, combines data from a variety of satellite sensors (AVHRR, SeaWiFS, MODIS) for the sunlit areas. The night-time data is from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). For the separate images, see E074/081 and E050/679

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Arctic, night-day satellite image (Asia, night-day satellite image)" offers a stunning view of our planet Earth from space. The composite image showcases the continent of Asia at its center against a backdrop of twinkling stars. With North positioned at the top, the left-hand half of the globe is immersed in darkness, revealing clusters of city lights that signify densely populated areas. In stark contrast, the right-hand side is bathed in sunlight and displays an array of elements such as white clouds, blue seas and oceans, lush green vegetation covering land areas, and arid regions depicted in brown hues. The boundary between day and night forms a striking line known as the dawn terminator. Created using data collected by various satellite sensors including AVHRR, SeaWiFS, MODIS for sunlit regions and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) for nighttime observations; this 2001 image provides valuable insights into our planet's geographical features and human population distribution. Beyond its aesthetic appeal lies a deeper message about environmental impact. The presence of artificial lights highlights light pollution caused by urbanization while also showcasing humanity's technological advancements. This thought-provoking photograph serves as a reminder to appreciate Earth's beauty while considering ways to protect it for future generations.
