Aerial view of Meteor Crater, Arizona

Meteor Crater. Fish-eye lens aerial view of Meteor Crater, near Winslow in northeast Arizona, USA. It is also called the Barringer Crater, after the mining engineer who first suggested that it was formed by a meteor impact. It is about 50, 000 years old and is about 200 metres deep and 800 metres across. Several attempts to mine the iron- rich material of the meteor were made before a visitor centre was built in the 1960 s. Two new minerals - coesite and stishovite - were identified here; both are forms of silica created at high temperatures and pressures. In recent years the crater has been used for astronaut training & studies in planet comparison

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view of Meteor Crater in Arizona showcases the immense scale and natural beauty of this geological wonder. The fish-eye lens used to capture the image adds a unique perspective, allowing us to fully appreciate the vastness of this crater near Winslow in northeast Arizona, USA. Also known as Barringer Crater, it was named after Daniel Barringer, a mining engineer who proposed that it was formed by a meteor impact. This incredible formation is estimated to be around 50,000 years old and measures approximately 200 meters deep and 800 meters across. The significance of Meteor Crater goes beyond its stunning appearance. It has played an important role in scientific research and discovery. Notably, two new minerals called coesite and stishovite were identified here - both forms of silica created under extreme temperatures and pressures. Over the years, Meteor Crater has served as more than just a tourist attraction; it has been utilized for astronaut training purposes and studies comparing our planet with others in our solar system. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of Earth's remarkable history and the powerful forces that have shaped our planet over time.
