Adam Smith, British economic philosopher C017 / 7103

Adam Smith (1723-1790), British economist and philosopher. Smith became professor of logic and then moral philosophy at Glasgow University, Scotland. His main work was An Enquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776). This was the first work to deal with economics separately from politics, ethics and law. He showed that rent, wages and profits are the source of all income. Smith believed that more wealth was produced with governmental non-interference and free trade. In March 2007, Smith was commemorated in portrait form on the new series of £ 20 notes issued by the Bank of England. A £ 20 is in Smiths hand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Adam Smith, a renowned British economic philosopher whose contributions have shaped our understanding of wealth and trade. Born in 1723, Smith's intellectual prowess led him to become a professor of logic and moral philosophy at Glasgow University in Scotland. However, it was his groundbreaking work titled "An Enquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations" published in 1776 that truly solidified his legacy. This seminal piece separated economics from politics, ethics, and law for the first time ever. In it, Smith eloquently argued that rent, wages, and profits are the fundamental sources of all income. Smith firmly believed that governmental non-interference and free trade were key factors in generating more wealth for nations. His ideas revolutionized economic thought during the 18th century by emphasizing individual self-interest as a driving force behind economic prosperity. Such was his impact on British society that in March 2007, Smith's portrait graced the new series of £20 notes issued by the Bank of England. Holding this note is like holding a piece of history itself - an homage to one man's profound influence on economics and philosophy. This artwork captures not only Adam Smith's likeness but also represents an era when ideas were shaping nations' destinies. It serves as a reminder that even centuries later, we continue to benefit from his pioneering insights into how economies function.
