Active galaxy

Active galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the Circinus active (Seyfert) galaxy. A Seyfert galaxy is thought to have a black hole at the centre of its small, bright nucleus (white). The super-massive black hole accretes gas and dust from the galaxy and emits some of it in two fast beams which jet from either side of the galaxy. One (magenta) is seen extending to upper centre here. This galaxy lies around 13 million light years from Earth in the constellation Circinus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of an active galaxy captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The image features the Circinus active galaxy, a remarkable example of a Seyfert galaxy believed to harbor a black hole at its core. At the heart of this small yet luminous nucleus lies a super-massive black hole that gravitationally attracts and consumes gas and dust from within the galaxy. The most striking feature of this galactic wonder is the emission of two fast beams, resembling vibrant jets, which emanate from opposite sides of the galaxy. One can observe one such jet extending towards the upper center in a stunning magenta hue. These powerful jets are formed as a result of material being expelled at high speeds due to intense gravitational forces near the black hole. Located approximately 13 million light years away from Earth in the constellation Circinus, this distant spectacle offers astronomers invaluable insights into cosmology and astrophysics. The intricate details captured by HST imagery provide scientists with crucial data about active galactic nuclei (AGN) and Seyfert galaxies. This awe-inspiring photograph not only highlights our fascination with celestial wonders but also serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel mysteries beyond our own planet. Courtesy of Science Photo Library, it symbolizes mankind's unending curiosity about our vast universe and its enigmatic phenomena.
