A. Mozhayskiy, Russian aviation pioneer

Alexander Fedorovich Mozhayskiy (1825-1890), Russian aviation pioneer and naval officer. Mozhayskiy pioneered heavier-then-air flight in the 1880s, managing to achieve a power-assisted take-off and flight of around 30 metres, in a monoplane design. This flight took place in Krasnoye Selo, on the outskirts of St Petersburg, Russia. It is thought that Mozhayskiys design, which involved a ramp and gliding, would not have been viable. However, the Soviets later claimed his flight as the first powered flight, ahead of the Wright brothers in 1904. This artwork dates from 1880
