6-metre reflector of Zelenchukskaya telescope

Part of the Bolshoi ( large ) altazimuth optical telescope at the Zelenchukskaya observatory, Russia. Situated in the Caucasus mountains, the telescope has an aperture of 6 metres, making it the largest single- mirror optical telescope in the world (as at 1993). The triangular objects around the mirror are protective doors. The telescope weighs over 800 tonnes, the mirror itself weighing 42 tonnes. The mirror was cast from glass; there are plans under study to replace this with a lighter, more thermally stable mirror made from Sital. Direct photography has been possible of objects of the 24th magnitude, though fainter objects may be visible with electronic systems

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring 6-metre reflector of the Zelenchukskaya telescope, a remarkable part of the Bolshoi altazimuth optical telescope located at the Zelenchukskaya observatory in Russia. Nestled amidst the majestic Caucasus mountains, this colossal telescope boasts an extraordinary aperture size of 6 metres, rendering it the largest single-mirror optical telescope worldwide as of 1993. The triangular objects encircling the mirror serve as protective doors, safeguarding this technological marvel. Weighing over a staggering 800 tonnes, with its mirror alone tipping the scales at an impressive 42 tonnes, this engineering feat is nothing short of astounding. Crafted from glass initially, there are ongoing plans to replace it with a lighter and more thermally stable Sital mirror. Equipped with such immense capabilities, direct photography has been made possible for celestial objects up to magnitude 24. However, advancements in electronic systems may enable astronomers to observe even fainter entities in our vast universe. This image not only highlights Russia's prowess in astronomy but also underscores their commitment to pushing boundaries and unraveling mysteries beyond our planet's atmosphere. The Zelenchukskaya telescope stands tall as a testament to human curiosity and scientific progress while offering us glimpses into realms previously unseen by human eyes.
