19th-century mining
19th-century mining. Historical artwork of miners descending a shaft at a salt mine. A system of ropes is being used to lower them down the shaft while they hold candles to illuminate the darkness around them. This is the salt mine at Wieliczka, Poland, in 1818. This salt deposit has been mined since the 13th century. Engraving by Gauchard, published in Mines and Miners (L. Simonin, 1868)
