1863 Kingsley Water Babies gorilla

In 1863 churchman Charles Kingsley wrote " The Waterbabies" a moralising tale that included human do-as-you-likes de-evolving back to apes (and further) because of their careless ways. Here a composite includes Kingsleys text from the first edition together with Linley Sambournes later illustration. In it of one of the ape like degenerates is trying to stop a (Du Chaillu like) hunter from shooting him - but is unable to speak. Kingsley found no problem believing Darwins thesis of natural selection. Many religious men of the time took special creation as allegorical, and thought God worked by natural laws which He had set in place

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a fascinating moment in history, combining the literary genius of Charles Kingsley with the artistic brilliance of Linley Sambourne. In 1863, Kingsley penned "The Waterbabies" a thought-provoking tale that explored morality and consequences through the lens of human evolution. This composite image features an excerpt from the first edition of Kingsley's book alongside Sambourne's later illustration. Within this scene, we witness one of these ape-like degenerates desperately attempting to halt a hunter, reminiscent of Du Chaillu, from shooting him. However, due to their devolutionary state caused by careless behavior, communication is beyond their grasp. It is noteworthy that Kingsley embraced Darwin's theory of natural selection without hesitation; he believed that God operated through natural laws established long ago. During this era, many religious individuals interpreted special creation as allegorical rather than literal truth and accepted Darwinian principles as compatible with their faith. This artwork serves as a testament to the intellectual climate at the time when science and religion coexisted harmoniously for some. Paul D. Stewart has expertly captured this historical convergence between literature, artistry, and scientific discourse in his photo print. It invites contemplation on humanity's role within nature while showcasing how diverse disciplines can intertwine to create something truly remarkable.
