1822 Gideon Mantell Letter Castle Place

A letter from Gideon Mantell shortly after his discovery of Iguanodon - then only the second dinosaur discovery, and before the announcement of the first Megalosaurus by William Buckland. Mantell apologises for being too busy to attend a dinner. It reveals the careful elegant script of Mantell and is addressed from Castle Place in Lewes, his home when he made his most important discoveries. The letter is placed near fossils and one of Mantells later book illustrations of his Iguanodon discoveries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in history, showcasing an 1822 letter from the renowned geologist Gideon Mantell. The letter, written shortly after his groundbreaking discovery of Iguanodon - only the second dinosaur ever discovered at that time - reveals Mantell's meticulous and elegant script. Addressed from Castle Place in Lewes, his home during his most significant paleontological findings, this artifact offers a glimpse into the life and work of one of science's pioneers. Displayed alongside fossils and one of Mantell's own book illustrations depicting his remarkable Iguanodon discoveries, this print transports us back to a time when dinosaurs were just beginning to be understood by humanity. It serves as a reminder of the immense dedication and passion exhibited by early scientists like Mantell who tirelessly pursued their research despite busy schedules. The juxtaposition between the delicate illustration, intricate handwritings on the letter, and ancient fossils creates an atmosphere that immerses viewers in both scientific discovery and artistic expression. This composition not only celebrates Mantell's achievements but also highlights how art can intertwine with scientific exploration. Through Paul D. Stewart's lens, this print invites us to appreciate both the beauty found within nature itself and mankind's ongoing quest for knowledge about our planet's prehistoric past.
